Discover the Power of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) for Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
Lifestyle Dentistry invests in modern technology to ensure patients enjoy fast, comfortable, and precise dentistry. Speaking of the latest technologies, we have a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) machine to improve diagnostics and treatment planning. This is also known as a 3D x-ray. Unlike a standard x-ray, a cone beam CT can capture images of soft tissues, sinuses, airway and TMJ, for an all-rounded diagnosis and treatment.
What is a Cone Beam CT?
A CBCT is an advanced special imaging machine that uses a rotating cone-shaped x-ray beam to generate a 3D rendering of your head and face inner anatomy. We recommend a CBCT when we need more information than what a standard x-ray can provide. We can use CBCT images to visualize your teeth position, bone structure, soft tissues, and nerve pathways.
Besides the shape of the beam, a CBCT has other differences from conventional CT. A traditional CT uses anode x-ray tubes to produce the radiation that generates images. A CBCT uses a medical fluoroscopy tube that emits less radiation but still generates super-detailed images for analysis.
To capture images of your oral and maxillofacial region, the scanning arm rotates around the head to take multiple exposures that are remodeled to form a high-resolution 3D image. The process takes about 15-20 seconds, and the images are displayed on a screen in real-time, allowing the dentist to promptly plan the best care for you.
Common uses of a Cone Beam CT
CBCT 3D images are displayed on a computer monitor, allowing the dentist to view the patient’s anatomy from different angles and with various levels of detail. Because of their detailed nature, CBCTs have numerous uses in dentistry.
Some include:
- Dental implant planning
- TMJ and skeletal evaluation
- Airway examination
- Orthodontic treatment planning
- Measuring dental tumors
- Evaluation of dental and facial trauma
Benefits of Cone Beam CT Imaging
Many dentists are switching to CBCT because it’s superior in many ways.
The many benefits of CBCT include:
- Lower radiation exposure than traditional CT
- High image quality
- Faster scanning time
- The procedure is painless and non-invasive
- Unlike standard x-rays, CBCT scans capture both soft and hard tissues
