Gum Infection Treatment: Fight Gum Disease with Arestin Periodontal Therapy

Lifestyle Dentistry in Smyrna, Georgia, believes preventive dentistry is the most cost-effective way to keep your gums free from infection. However, if you haven’t been diligent with your oral hygiene, Dr. Aja Nichols and the team offer several periodontal treatments to overcome your condition. Depending on the severity of your gum infection, we may recommend Arestin as part of the treatment plan. This topical antibiotic is super-effective and totally safe for mild to severe gum disease.

What is Arestin?

Gum or periodontal disease is a chronic infection of the soft tissues. If left untreated, the infection can spread, permanently damaging gums, bone, and connective tissue. The results? Loose teeth and tooth loss in severe cases!

Gum disease is easily treatable in its early stages using treatments like Arestin. Arestin is an antibiotic that kills harmful bacteria and prevents them from causing further damage. Arestin isn’t taken orally. Instead, the medication is applied directly to your gums and into the infected periodontal pockets to kill unwanted bacteria.

Arestin is often used with other treatments like scaling and root planing (SRP). However, for mild gum disease like gingivitis, Arestin can be used as a stand-alone treatment alongside an oral hygiene plan that includes good brushing and flossing. Dr. Nichols will always examine your oral health to devise a treatment plan best suited for your case.

What else should I know about Arestin?

Arestin (minocycline HCl) Microspheres, 1 mg, reduces pockets between teeth and gums by targeting the gum disease-causing bacteria at their core. When applied to your gums, this antibiotic can stay in the pockets for some time while the microspheres release antibiotic properties.

Arestin is used as an adjunct to SRP for effective treatment and reduced treatment time. Without Arestin, gum infection will likely recur immediately, even after treatments like SRP. This always results in a never-ending battle with periodontal disease. Arestin, combined with other periodontal treatments, effectively eliminates bad bacteria and periodontal pockets, even in the most vulnerable patients.

At Lifestyle Dentistry, we offer the PerioProtect method to apply Arestin. We use custom-made PerioProtect trays to deliver the medication directly into the pockets between your gums and teeth. These trays are designed to fit securely on your gums, preventing medication leakage. Wearing the trays for a few minutes daily effectively stops harmful bacteria from recolonizing, allowing your gums to heal.
